SLEEP?? What's That?

Michael Vialle

So many talk about lack of sleep new parents experience and what to do get more/better sleep.

Not much is said about sleeplessness while pregnant. My wife, Lindsay, started having problems sleeping through the night around the second trimester.

We’re now 2 weeks out from Carson’s due date and sleep is becoming more difficult for my wife (an hour or two at a time) as Carson grows, claiming Lindsay’s bladder space, pushing under her ribs, doing the “floss” all night, heartburn and supposedly, I snore. I’m certain the mind is a culprit too, whether anxiety of the future, nesting or the fact that she worries about waking me through the night only adds to the problem.

Early on we addressed our creaky bed frame and squeaky mattress. We found a foam/gel mattress that met our criteria and I designed and made a platform frame- Welcome Silent Night!

Next, we added a body pillow to the mix.

Heartburn got bad, so Tums and Zantac (she called it Xanax the first time. Freudian slip?? ;) ) were next.

Finally, I noticed the only time she slept well was during her naps - no dogs, kids or hubs. I asked if it’d be ok with her if I slept on the couch and kept the dogs out of the bedroom to mimic her nap environment. While I feel like a vagrant and our 7 year old has sensed an open spot on the bed which he’s gladly decided to occupy at 4 in the morning, it’s been a few nights in a row now that Lindsay is waking up only once during the night.  I’m going to call that a win!
